We are blessed to host this celebration each spring and to be in the presence of wonderful missionaries who serve in the name of Jesus Christ all over the world. The Mission Celebration Weekend is full of learning, worshiping, and fellowship. There will also be opportunities for children to participate.

These people have been through 50 hours of specialized training in Christian caregiving and join a team of three Stephen Leaders at Boone United Methodist. Stephen Ministers provide confidential one-to-one Christian care to people experiencing a crisis or going through a difficult time. Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receiver for around an hour to listen, care, encourage, pray, and provide emotional and spiritual support for the person. Caring relationships last for as long as the person’s need persists. The Stephen Ministries organization is based in St. Louis but serves more than 11,000 congregations representing 150 Christian denominations worldwide.

Please lift up our new Stephen Ministers in your prayers, asking that God bless their ministry and work through them to bring hope and healing to those they are serving.

Congratulations Confirmands

A wonderful Spirit-filled event.

Dear 6th Grade Youth,

You are invited on a very important journey – Confirmation!
What is Confirmation? Being in middle school, you are at a special age when you are not only making more decisions for yourself but also may find yourself questioning what you believe. Confirmation is a great time to ask those questions. Confirmation refers to the decision a person makes to respond to God’s grace with intentional commitment, publicly reaffirming his or her baptismal vows before the congregation. We offer a deliberate time of preparation before this service.

Fall Studies Will Begin Soon

Small group studies are a great place to make new friends and grow together. These small groups are extremely important at Boone UMC. Our Adult Sunday School classes are open for all age groups, with something for everyone. Classes meet at 9:55 a.m. every Sunday, and guests are always welcome. The classes vary in format and size, so you are sure to find a class that meets your needs.

From Luke Edwards – Moraho Boone UMC!

That’s Kinyarwandan for hello. I returned last night from three weeks of extending our church’s arms to East Africa. It was an incredible experience and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. The first ten days I spent in Addis Ababa, the bustling capital of Ethiopia. I worked alongside three incredible pastors in the Ethiopian Evangelical Church, teaching principles of Christian leadership to Ethiopian young adults, most of whom worked in campus ministries from all across the country, some traveling twelve hours by bus to get there. These young adults are the future leaders of Ethiopia, they are the hope for a peaceful and just Africa. These young people were taught about the importance of intimacy with God, servant leadership, and other vital attributes of a Christian leader. One topic in particular that was very well received was the day spent on vision. The young adults worked on clarifying the vision that God had placed on their lives. Everyone was grateful to Boone UMC for hosting this conference and sending me to be with them. It was a beautiful picture of our faith, an American young adult swapping stories of ministry and life with Ethiopian young adults, all to the glory of God.

The next week Andy Ellis and Carolyn Thompson joined me in Rwanda, where we spent the week seeing the ZOE Ministry in action. The ZOE Ministry empowers aids orphans of Africa to follow Christ and care for themselves independent of outside aid. We were awestruck by the stories of Christ radically redeeming these children. We heard from countless orphans who had depended on begging, stealing, or indentured servitude to survive, who now provide for themselves and even help others. ZOE works with the local government in Rwanda to identify orphans in rural regions and forms authentic community among them, while training and empowering them to live healthy, productive, Christian lives. The faith, maturity, and radical generosity of these children was unbelievable. I can’t wait to tell you more about this trip in the coming weeks, but until then know that because of your sup port and prayers The Holy Spirit was moving powerfully in the lives of young Ethiopians and Rwandans.

From Pastor Jason

I’d love to hear from you. What would you like me to preach about? What spiritual issues are you struggling with? What issues in the world would you like to hear addressed? What biblical texts or spiritual issues have you never heard about from the pulpit that you’d like to? Perhaps most importantly, what sort of topics would make you most likely to invite your friends not now in church to Boone Methodist?

I can’t promise I’ll hit every suggestion but I will seriously consider them all. Please send your suggestions to seniorminister@booneumc.org or put a note in my box in the office.

Welcome Rev. Dr. John Ed Mathison

Dr. Mathison is one of the most important leaders in Methodism over the last generation. We have the esteemed privilege to have him preach for us on May 6th during our 8:45 and 11 a.m. services as well as teach in the chapel during the Sunday School hour on the topic “Does God need the church?”

We are blessed to have the Boone United Methodist Preschool perform for us on May 6th during the 8:45 a.m. service.

This wonderful mission of our church is a morning program for 2, 3 and 4 year olds as well as a Transitional Kindergarten. They use weekly themes to teach age appropriate skills and incorporate Christian values in the daily lessons.

Thank you to our wonderful staff of dedicated childhood educators who work tirelessly to nurture the youngest members of God’s family. They not only model Christian attitudes but help these children experience wonder and awe at God’s world.

J.O.Y. Group May 8th, 12:00 Noon in the Family Life Center

Lunch will be available for a donation. Our program will be by Brian Yerman & Amanda Spencer, both local folks who perform Old Time Mountain music. Reservations are requested—please tear off and place in the offering plate, or call the church office at 264-6090.

Our menu this month will be Chicken and Broccoli Bake, Fruited Rice, Salad, Bread and Dessert.

A Reception for Dr. George Naff
