The Methodist movement was born out of campus ministry of a sort at Oxford in the 18th century. Boone Methodist has a long history of faculty, administrators, and students worshiping and joining and serving and thriving at our church. We’re a place where students can be involved in church life not only with fellow students, but with people of all ages. We will study alongside you, encourage you, pray for you, feed you, ask you to sit with a baby or an elderly person and pray with them, and we will walk with you all the way through college.
Our commitment to college students is visible in many areas. One is our support of the Appalachian Wesley Foundation on ASU’s campus. Brad Farrington is a fantastic campus minister. Wesley has an array of worship, fellowship and service opportunities, and we have a close partnership with them that dates back decades. Development of the whole person is the greatest gift a college experience can give; yet only so much spiritual development can be done by an intentionally secular university. Campus ministry is crucial then to growing the whole person, and we hope you will do that with us at the Wesley Foundation.
Our worship services are all designed with students in mind. Our Crossroads service at 10:55 in our Family Life Center is a low-pressure, highly flexible, “emerging” style service. Vern Collins preaches, and leads, and trains college students and others who volunteer with our youth ministry. Other members of the community serve at that service by cooking for their friends, leading music, setting up, taking down, praying and greeting. Our other two worship services also serve as a spiritual home to many young people. Our 8:45 am service is a contemporary, praise and worship service; our 11:00 am sevice is a more traditional liturgy. Preaching at both is designed to incorporate and honor student experiences and perspectives, since they are such an integral part of our life together as a church.
There are more opportunities for college students at BUMC as well—a gardening ministry, Boone Area Missions, a variety of small groups and study opportunities. Please be in touch with any of these pastors for more.
