Our Mission

Provide a safe, loving, and nurturing environment for K-8th grade students after their school day ends. Help predominantly Spanish-speaking children improve their English skills and help predominantly English-speaking children improve their Spanish skills while helping build connections and relationships among students and families across languages and cultures.

Evidence shows that afterschool programs help support the social, mental, and emotional well-being and development of children. Benefits include academic support, increased school participation, increased environmental safety, and formation of healthy nutrition and physical activity habits.

Becca Wood

Afterschool Bilingual Program Director

Hello! My name is Becca Wood, and I am the Director of the Afterschool Bilingual Program. I was born and raised in Georgia but moved to Boone in 2017 to attend college in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains — and I’ve loved it so much that I have stayed! I received a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, allowing me the opportunity to build my own degree with a focus on wilderness therapy and education. I also received a bachelor’s degree in languages, literatures and cultures with a focus on Spanish and Hispanic studies. Language can be a barrier, but it can also be a beautiful way to connect with people around us. My goal for this program is to take the intimidation out of learning a new language and meeting people from different backgrounds and to make it fun and rewarding!

Our fall 2024 program is Aug. 19 through Dec. 19.
