This year marks 150 years of ministry and mission at Boone United Methodist Church. Over the years God has been faithful, and as our anniversary theme affirms – “Glory to God, Who is able to do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine by His power at work within us.”(Ephesians 3:20) We will celebrate this significant milestone and the ways God has blessed our community through Boone UMC on Sunday, October 23, 2016 with a combined Service at 11:00am and lunch following. The Rev. John Fitzgerald will be our guest preacher for the day.
In the months leading up to our celebration Sunday, we would love to remember and celebrate our rich heritage. Day Break respite care meets each Monday and Friday at 9 am to 2 pm in the Room 200 of BUMC. This respite care program is directed by the High Country Caregiver Foundation and provides a needed break for family caregivers of loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, early dementia and memory loss. Participants may be frail but must be physically stable and not need any hands on personal care. Day Break provides stimulating activities and opportunities for socialization and admission is considered on a case by case basis. The 2016 Fall Bazaar will be held on September 16 and 17th. This year’s bazaar promises to be the largest and best bazaar ever. The Bazaar will be open from 7:30 am until 6:00 pm on Friday, and from 7:30 am until 11:00 am on Saturday. As always the Bazaar will feature great food, a silent auction, and one of the largest selections of used items and homemade food in the high country.
As the time draws near, we will continue post more information about the Bazaar. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Donations:
We are interested in almost anything that we can sell. This includes (but is not limited t0) furniture, clothing, linens, electronic devices, books, dvd’s, cd’s, tapes, baked goods, home cooking, etc. However, there are a few exceptions: baby cribs, mattresses, toilets, tube TV’s over 32″, and pianos. These items have just proven to be too heavy or large to sell effectively in our environment.
We have trailers set up behind the church for your donations and are open to receive donations from 8:00am until 4:00pm daily. There will be someone in the church office from 9:00am until 5:00pm on Monday through Thursday to give you a donation slip for tax purposes.
Home pickups will be available the last two weeks before the auction for large items. In September, you are welcomed to call the church office to schedule a pick-up (for large items only, please).
Silent Auction:
The Silent Auction is an exciting part of the Fall Bazaar. The Silent Auction runs through 6:00 pm Friday night, September 16. If you have an item that you would like to donate to the Silent Auction, please bring the item to the church office on Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. The Silent Auction features items that are a little nicer than the average Bazaar item. If you have a particularly nice item, or a service, we would encourage you to consider donating to the Silent Auction.
You may have to think a little out of the box for services you could donate. If you are a piano player, you may want to donate three hours of lessons to the highest bidder. Do you have a beach house that is not used every week? If you are a lawyer or an accountant, you might offer the preparation of a will or maybe someone’s tax preparation to the highest bidder. High school student…how about a few hours of baby sitting. If you have any questions, once again, you should consider contacting the Bazaar Chairperson.
Volunteers:
Are you interested in being a part of this year’s Bazaar? There are all kinds of volunteer positions available…and it is a great way to meet other folks in the church. We still need individuals to help sort and price donations, work at sales positions, and many, many more skilled and less skilled jobs…all are guaranteed to be fun. We have jobs for those with morning, days, or evenings to volunteer. For more information about volunteering, contact the Bazaar Chairman, Doris Thompson.
Baked Goods Donations:
Baked goods and hand made items have always been a large part of the Bazaar’s success. We have many folks come back ever year wanting to buy more of “somebody’s” homemade jam or tomato sauce. Here are some of the items that we are interested in having donated to this year’s bazaar:
1) Pies
2) Cakes – 2 or 3 layer cakes, pound cakes, sheet cakes, coffee cakes, cupcakes
3) Cookies
4) Brownies, fudges, and scones
5) Breads
6) Healthy Choice Items (Glutton, sugar, or fat free)
7) Jams and Jellies
8) Canned vegetables and salsas
“¢ Wrap in clear plastic or place smaller items in baggies.
“¢ Label and present items as attractive as possible
“¢ Include maker’s name (if desired)
“¢ Bring items on Thursday, September 15th if possible for pricing
Gift Cards:
One of the benefits of the auction is the outreach opportunities that is available to the members of the church and community. In addition to being able to make donations of items to the auction, gift cards are available for purchase. These cards, in $25.00 denominations, can be purchased and then donated back to the church for distribution to those in need. These cards are made available to school children and families in Avery, Watauga, and Ashe Counties.
There are many other agencies that benefit from the Bazaar including the Salvation Army, Children’s Council, Watauga County Health Department, The Human Society, and many, many others.
Pick-ups for Fall Bazaar Donations
If you have large furniture items to donate to the BUMC Bazaar that should not go into the trailer, please call the church office (828-264-6090) to schedule free pickup times. We appreciate your holding your donations until the normal furniture pickup days on Saturday September 3 and 10, but earlier pickup times will be arranged by appointment starting immediately.
