The Science of the Good Samaritanby Dr. Emily Smith
Our summer reading for 2026 is The Science of the Good Samaritan by Dr. Emily Smith. The book examines the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan and applies it to contemporary issues, emphasizing how individuals can act as compassionate neighbors in a divided and inequitable world.
On Sunday, Aug. 30, Dr. Smith will speak in our Sanctuary services. She also will hold a book discussion that afternoon at 2:00 pm in our Chapel. Pick up a copy of the book and prepare for her presentations. Books can be purchased at Venture Wine and Chocolate in Downtown Boone or from Boone UMC’s Chapel.
Dr. Smith is an associate research professor of Global Health at Duke University. She specializes in children’s health and improving health outcomes in low-income communities around the world.
