Author Talk, Community Meal, & Food Drive

Hear from Amanda Held Opelt, author of Provisions, and enjoy delicious Appalachian foods discussed in her book

Join us Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Family Life Center as we hear from author Amanda Held Opelt about her latest book, Provisions — “a sensory celebration of Appalachian culinary traditions and a call to reclaim the lost rituals, recipes, and food folklore of the places you call home.”

The evening will begin at 5:15 pm with our Together We Eat meal, which will feature a mouth-watering Appalachian menu prepared by our very own Food Ministries Director, Jacob Penick. Amanda will share her songwriting talents with us prior to her 6:15 pm book conversation. She will discuss the theology of food and how God beckons us to come home to the land of our ancestors, to come home to our bodies, and to come home to our family around the dinner table. She will offer a personal reflection on the history of Appalachia and how the region’s rhythms of life, particularly around food, have shaped her.

A food collection of non-perishable items will be taken during the evening. Donations will benefit the Hunger & Health Coalition.

Books will be available for sale during this event. As always, pay what you can, eat what you need for the weekly meal; a donation of $5 per person is suggested.

We hope you will be a part of this evening of food, community, and conversation.
